32nd Advanced Studies Program

 

The 32nd Advanced Studies Program of the APAY concluded on 28th of November 2014 with the holding of the Graduation Dinner at the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong. The Graduation Dinner was inaugurated by Mr. Karl Lau, the General Secretary of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, while Dr. Cecil Chan the Immediate Past President of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong delivered a special message to the graduating participants. Dr. Chan underscored the need of putting into practice of the Christian principles in our YMCAs. He urged that all our activities in the YMCAs should be Christ centered and based on the teachings of Christ. Mr. Kohei Yamada, General Secretary of the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs gave away the certificates to the ASP Graduates.

 

 

This year, 11 YMCA secretaries, representing the countries of Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Senegal, Africa participated at the program. The program started on 3rd of November covered a wide range of subjects ranging from the YMCA mission, Contextual Theology & Social Responses, Social Realities & Analysis, Global Citizenship Education, Alternative Tourism, Interfaith Dialogue, Peace Building & Conflict Resolution, Gender Mainstreaming, Movement Strengthening, Organizational Review, Resource Mobilization, Good Governance in the YMCA, Strategic Planning Process, Youth Empowerment and they also participated in a Spiritual Retreat.

 

Dr. David Suh, Hans Lutz, Dr. Hope Antone, Ron Coulombe, Max Edigar, Fr. Elton Fernandez, Chuck Allison, Beng Seng Chan, Duncan Chowdhury and Kohei Yamada were the resource persons of the 32nd Advanced Studies Program.

 

At the end of the program, each participant had to prepare a Re-entry Plan elaborating his or her ambition to restart their work in their respective YMCAs based on the learning at the Advanced Studies Program.

 

The Advanced Studies Program was initiated in the year 1982. Since then 414 YMCA professionals have successfully participated in this Advanced Studies Program. Out of which, 372 YMCA Secretaries are from Asia, 14 from South America, 3 from Caribbean, 23 from Africa and 2 from Europe. We are pleased to inform that most of the ASP Alumni of the ASP are now serving the YMCAs as professionals in senior positions.

 

Finally, we also express our gratitude to the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and the YMCA of Hong Kong, for their support and cooperation to host this ASP Program. We also acknowledge the financial assistance received from Y’s Men International IHQ, this partially supported for two of our secretaries to participate in this program.
