Metro YMCA: Service Learning with the Y

Volunteerism has become something close to the hearts of many in the developed society of modern Singapore. Although all students have been introduced to community service through the government's community involvement programme, many have taken the extra step to involve themselves in additional service projects, driven by their passion to serve. In Metro Y we have committed ourselves to take yet one more step. We combine the aspect of experiential learning together with volunteerism, which is what is called "Service Learning".

Volunteerism benefits the community in the most needed ways, while Service Learning adds on the idea of acquiring self-improvement in the process. Our Metro Y's programmes focus on this more rational form of volunteering, one that allows participants to enjoy non-pecuniary returns. Programmes in the Y all play a part in nurturing youths through a continuous learning process. For instance, children who join our term swimming programme come back as aquatic leaders, who with enough experience become our aquatic instructors. Learning and serving balance out, benefiting society and self at the same time.

It is precisely this aspect of getting returns from the time spent on helping others that attract new youths to join and also existing ones to stay on. With the idea of Service-Learning significantly blended into our activities, we can be assured that youths can help improve the lives of others and their own. This depicts the shift in focus of our youths, not only interested in learning and developing themselves into all-rounder, but also their willingness to serve, to contribute to society.
