A New Challenge for YMCAs in Japan

1.  Higher taxes for the working age group and high welfare needed for the elderly

2.  More and more elderly living alone or with their spouse a independent living

3.  30% of the elderly above 75 years old require some kind of care a Lack of human resource

4.  Elderly will have to take care of themselves and look for a meaningful life

5.  From "welfare of the poor or needy" to guaranteeing "everybody's life of wellness"

6.  More elderly will have to make and live on their own welfare of their later lives.

What does the YMCA in Japan do presently?

•  Nursing home for the elderly who needs extensive care

What are the challenges for YMCAs in the aging society (high percentage of elderly)?

•  Provide more volunteer opportunities for the 60's and 70's when they are healthy and have time

•  Provide more group activities for the elderly (fellowship and self fulfilment)

•  Develop rehabilitation and preventive health programs, and organize with hospitals and clinics

•  Develop good management of elderly service programs, with many volunteers and inter generational activities.
