Over the years, in order to assist and serve the disabled, Tainan YMCA invests a great deal of resources to establish numerous organizations to better carry out programs for the disabled. Holding the YMCA Purpose in our hearts, and following the Spirit of Jesus, we seek to promote the health of their "Body", "Mind", and "Spirit". We hope to help them cultivate a more independent, optimistic view of life, develop harmonious relationships with others, and enter into societal life, so that they can also serve others and contribute to the society.

The following are the organizations Tainan YMCA has established to promote the programs for the disabled:

A. Tainan Chu-Kung Handicap People Association

Year Founded : 1977 - "Tainan Chu-Kung Handicap People Club" was founded. In 1997 it became a non-profit organization called "Tainan Chu-Kung Handicap People Association".

Program Contents:

  1. Hold different kinds of activities or seminars to enhance the intellectual growth and quality of life for the disabled.
  2. Promote recreational and outdoor activities for the disabled.
  3. Provide referral services for the disabled, assist them in the area of job search, or help companies to employ the disabled; offer vocational training and counseling to assist them locate jobs or start their own businesses.
  4. Encourage the government to establish welfare policies for the disabled.

B. Tainan Chu-Kung Wheelchair Tennis Team

Year Founded : 1983

Program Contents:

•  Practice every Tuesday and Thursday evening, with training by professional coaches regularly.

•  Hold wheelchair tennis competitions, or attend formal wheelchair competitions or international open competitions, in order to cultivate outstanding athletes.

C. Tainan YMCA Counseling Center of the Disabled

Year Founded : 1986

Program Contents:

•  Assist the disabled address psychological, emotional, and relational problems, and cultivate a productive life attitude.

•  Promote their understanding of intimate relationships; assist them develop friendships, and build happy marital and family life.

•  Establish counseling service hotline, assist them address educational professional issues, and provide referral services.

D. Swimming Rehab Programs

Year Started : 1986

Program Contents:

•  Hold various swimming rehab classes for different kinds of handicaps, such as swimming classes for the CP, for the mentally retarded, for the deaf, for the blind, and for the physically challenged.

•  Hold workshops to train and cultivate outstanding and professional swimming coach for the disabled.

•  Hold various swimming competition, and train various disabled swimming athletes.

E. Various Disabled Swimming Teams

Year started : 1988

Program Contents:

•  Organize various swimming teams, including physically handicapped swimming team, blind swimming team, swimming team for the deaf and mute, and swimming team for the mentally retarded.

•  Hold weekly swimming activities under the training of professional coaches; through fellowship activities to promote swimming rehab exercises.

•  Hold national or international swimming competition, or attend formal swimming competitions for the disabled, in order to cultivate outstanding athletes.

F. Tainan YMCA Chu-Kung Handicap People Choir

Year Founded: 1990

Program Contents:

•  Every Wednesday evening, the choir practice is conducted by a professional music teacher.

•  Promote the musical understanding and appreciation of the disabled; seek to enhance their self affirmation through group interaction.

•  Perform at various social service agencies, churches, and charity events upon invitations.

•  Arrange international performance tours, and promote diplomatic and international cultural exchange.

G. Tainan Disabled People Sport Committee

Year Founded: 1994

Program Contents:

•  Offer various training programs and workshops in the area of physical rehab for the disabled.

•  Hold national or citywide sport competitions for the disabled every year, such as swimming, track and field competition, tug of war, bowling, table tennis, wheelchair tennis, table pool, croquet, and other parent-child games and competitions.

•  Train outstanding disabled athletes to represent Tainan to attend national and international competitions.

H. Tainan Home Care Center for the Disabled

Year Founded: 2002

Program Contents:

Provide home care for the moderately or severely disabled, including services such as housework assistance, secretarial services, bodily care, medical services, emotional support, and other kinds of assistance as needed.
