A milestone in defining the Mission of the YMCA in the region was the YMCA Seminar on Development in 1976 held in Chiang Mai , Thailand . Since then, many YMCAs in the region have been engaged in holistic development work that focuses on people as subjects. A key focus of our regional programme in the past Quadrennium was on participatory development in the community, especially in impoverished communities greatly impacted upon by globalisation. YMCAs have worked with the poor, the socially disadvantaged or marginalized, promoting the building of civil society, sustainability, and self-reliance in an environment of love, justice and peace, and manifesting our spirituality by so doing.

During the 17 th General Assembly, YMCAs reaffirmed their commitment to continue to be socially responsible global citizens in community, responding to issues impacting on lives of people, working for peace with justice, and fostering sustainability for wholeness of life.
