Nepal YMCA Response on People Issue

Re: Press Release

The executive committee of Nepal YMCA held on 2 nd September 2004 in Kumaripaty, Patan has decided to appeal to all to condemn the massacre of twelve innocent Nepalese hostages, which were held since 20 th August 2004 and were brutally killed on 31 st August 2004 in Iraq . These are all young people below ages of 30 years who had gone to Jordan to work via Manpower Company. The Jordanian company has taken them to work in Iraq . But unfortunately they were captured by the unknown terrorist group called the Army of Ansar al-Sunna.

This is a crime of humanity. The blood of all these innocent people will never forgive those murderers and their land. Nepal YMCA appeal to all to send the protest letter to Iraqi government and also US Army Chief in Iraq and also put pressure to find out those murderers and bring them into justice.

The meeting also decided to request to his majesty the government of Nepal to compensate of those twelve Nepali hostage bereaved families and put necessary pressure to Iraqi Government to find out those murderers and punish them. The executive committee also regrets to His Majesty the Government of Nepal for not doing hard work from side in order to release the hostage in time.

Sincerely,
Mukti Nath Acharya
National General Secretary
National Council of YMCAs Nepal

Nepali Hostages Crisis in Iraq

Hostages Say US 'Lies Brought Them to Iraq

The Kathmandu Post August 29, 2004(AFP) - Twelve Nepalese held hostage in Iraq were shown on video footage on an Islamist website Saturday with one of them reading a statement saying they had been misled into working there by "America lies".

"We come here to Iraq on the basis of an agreement between our company, Nepalese agency, and the America (army), with the help of a Jordanian company. to help with American force", said one of the hostages, seated amongst 11 other captives.

"The salary is . 2500 USD they give us on guarantee, and then they said for us that the situation is not dangerous in Iraq , but we see the situation is dangerous", added the hostage, reading a statement in broken English that was difficult to comprehend.

"We are arrested by unknown group and this is on evidence the situation is not under security or control in Iraq , said the hostage, who had a US flag pinned to his chest, covering the front of his shirt.

"So we ask anyone who wants to come to Iraq not to be cheated by these high salary because they are false and America is lying", he added, fumbling over the words.

As he spoke, the other hostages held up what appeared to be their passport. Some were seated alongside the speaker on the floor while others stood behind, all of them against a black backdrop, which read "Ansar al-Sunna" (- Kathmandu Post National Daily)

Solidarity from abroads

Subject: RE: Fate of twelve Nepalese hostages

I especially found the news about the twelve young people from Nepal killed in Iraq very disturbing. I have told our colleages that the people of Nepal are the most hospitable people in the world. I was a guest in your country several years ago, and I will never forget the hospitality and unique beauty of people everywhere.

Please accept my message with our thoughts and prayers that go out to the families and the loved ones of these young people who were killed as innocent victims of a much larger conflict.

Subject: RE: Fate of twelve Nepalese hostages

Dear Mukti Nath,

It was really shocking to hear the gruesome killing of innocent Nepali people. This kind of violence truly doesnt make sense. My heart goes out to families who grieve the loss of their loved ones under such terrible and inhuman circumstances. My prayer is that people who are involved in such acts of violence will somehow come to the point of understanding the futility of such efforts to achieve their end.

I stand with you in prayer as you make effort to reach out with Gods love to your fellow citizens through the YMCA Nepal.

Sincerely,
Rev. Samuel D. Stephens
President, Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs
