YMCA CUTTACK

Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is situated in the heart of the city of Cuttack, on the bank of river Mahanadi, in the state of Orissa, India. Remnants of the ancient “Barabati Fort” near YMCA, stands as a symbol of social and cultural heritage of Cuttack- the “Millennium City” or “Silver City”. YMCA Cuttack has spread its activities at many places in Orissa. YMCA Cuttack is one of the oldest YMCAs in India and is part of International YMCA Movement. It was established in 1893 by Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das (Utkal Gourav meaning pride of Orissa).

Over the ages YMCA Cuttack has grown manifold both in terms of area coverage and fields of intervention. Through its various projects and programs, YMCA Cuttack caters to the specific needs of the youth and vulnerable groups. It has always promptly responded to people’s needs with appropriate interventions, more so, when the needs are acute like after natural disasters. Laying emphasis on educating and empowering people and focusing on youth, YMCA aims at creating a society based on the community. YMCA Cuttack identifies itself and works with the people to form a community based on the spirit of self-help and local autonomy.

Project and activities

YMCA, Cuttack at its headquarter at Old Secretariat Road, Cuttack City houses a 40- bed hostel for students and working men. The three-storied building also offers facilities like conference hall, guest room and games and sports (Table Tennis and Badminton). Throughout the year YMCA organizes various programmes for different groups of people. It also makes intensive efforts to uplift the vulnerable and downtrodden through various short and long term programmes.

YMCA Cuttack response during Pandemic and Post pandemic

During the pandemic, YMCA Cuttack provided short term supplies and aid for COVID-19 affected communities in lockdown. Hygiene kit, medical supplies and PPE distributed to front-line responders, vulnerable groups and individuals. YMCA Cuttack extended its helping hands to State govt. by donating Rs. 100000/- to CMDRF. It also supported post Covid patients by distributing protein kits to the needy and helpless. As the lockdowns were lifted YMCA Cuttack planned to unite the youth of the states by organizing different sport activities like Cricket, Badminton tournament etc. These programs were focused to hunt the hidden talent of individuals representing from different cities and areas which would enable them to march forward.

The new financial year begins on 1st April 2022 which is known as Utkal Divas or Odisha Day where a Grand Marathons gets organized by State Govt. In order to strengthen, motivate and encourage the participants, YMCA Cuttack distributed energy drinks to the participants and congratulated the winners of the Marathon.

Eye Camp 2022

Our eyes are an important part of our health. Most people rely on their eyes to see and make sense of the world around them. But some eye diseases can lead to vision loss, so it is important to identify and treat eye diseases as early as possible. One should get his/her eyes checked as often, as it is important to keep our body healthy; we also need to keep our eyes healthy.

By keeping the same vision, YMCA Cuttack always conducts Eye testing camp in different parts of the city, rural areas and its periphery in the month of April every year. This year, Eye camp was conducted at YMCA, Bhagatpur Project Centre, Dist: Cuttack on 23rd Apr. 2022. The panchayat consist of 17 villages with a population of more than 7000 villagers. YMCA Cuttack reached to all the villages and announced the scheduled of the programs and encourages all the villagers to visit the testing centre where testing and surgery will be free of cost. The purpose of conducting this program at Bhagatpur was to reach to the unreached where people stay at the forest areas, tribal areas where it is very difficult to commute.

YMCA scrutinized all the places and decided to conduct it at common centre. During the preliminary survey, YMCA Cuttack came across with a lady named Ms. Rukmani Jena aged 35 years who was partially blind due to the negligence of her step mother. By the help of the locals, YMCA Cuttack identified the family members of the lady and discussed with their family members to allow Ms. Jena to visit the testing centre. There were total 252 patients who had done their testing out of which 52 patients were identifies as Cataract and Glaucoma patients.

YMCA Cuttack in association with JPM Rotary Eye Hospital had fixed the date of surgery of the patients on 25-04-2022 at JPM Rotary Eye Hospital centre. All the surgeries and treatment will be done at free of cost. YMCA Cuttack was very much thankful to JPM Rotary for their immediate action and response towards the betterment of the society.
