News of the Newly Elected President of Bangladesh YMCA


The 47th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh (NCYB) was successfully held on Friday, 13 March 2026, at the Matthew Malakar
Conference Hall of YMCA International House, Savar, Dhaka, in an atmosphere marked by enthusiasm, dignity, and a spirit of fellowship.

Following the AGM, the election of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of NCYB took place at the same venue. The election process was conducted smoothly under the supervision of a three-member Election Committee chaired by Former President of APAY and NCYB Mr. Babu Markus Gomes.

During the election, Mr. Moses Shamol Gomes, widely known as Shamol Gomes, Representative of Chittagong YMCA, was unanimously elected as the President of the National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh (NCYB) for the term 2025–2027.

Mr. Shamol Gomes has been actively associated with Chittagong YMCA since 1987 and became a full member on 3 November 1995. Over the years, he has served the YMCA with dedication in several leadership capacities at both the local and national levels. At Chittagong YMCA, he served as Vice Chairman (Personnel) during 2004–2005 and 2009–2010, and later as Chairman during the terms 2011–2012, 2015–2016, and 2019–2022.

At the national level, he served as a Director of National Executive Committee in 2011 and later as Vice President in 2015. He has also been involved in various committees, contributing significantly to the strengthening and development of the YMCA movement in Bangladesh.

A devoted Christian with a strong commitment to faith and service, Mr. Shamol Gomes has been actively engaged in church life as well. He served as Vice Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary under the Chattogram Metropolitan Archdiocese.

Beyond his involvement with YMCA and the Church, Mr. Gomes has also contributed to a number of social and community initiatives. He served as Vice Chairman of the Christian Co-operative Thrift and Credit Union Limited, Chattogram from 2011 to 2014 and was a member of the Governing Body of St. Placid’s School & College from 2018 to 2021.

Professionally, Mr. Shamol Gomes has been serving with the international shipping company Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) since 1991, demonstrating a long record of commitment and professionalism in his career.

Mr. Shamol Gomes is married to Ms. Sophia Roselin Gomes, a homemaker. The couple is blessed with two sons. Their elder son, Mr. Stanley Franklin Gomes, is married and employed, while their younger son, Mr. Gregory Mark Gomes, is currently pursuing his studies.

He was born on 5 June 1968 in Padrishibpur, Barishal, and has been residing in Chattogram since 1986. He completed his Secondary School Certificate from St. Alfred High School, his Higher Secondary education from Notre Dame College, Dhaka, and later obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Chittagong.

With his extensive experience, strong commitment to service, and long association with the YMCA movement, it is expected that under the leadership of Mr. Shamol Gomes, the newly elected National Executive Committee will continue to advance the mission and values of the YMCA and further strengthen its service to communities across Bangladesh.
