Chittagong YMCA Celebrates International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was celebrated with due dignity at the Chittagong YMCA on Sunday, 8 March 2026, at 7:00 PM. According to the declaration of the United Nations, March 8 is observed every year around the world, including in Bangladesh, with great importance and respect. Around 60 women and men attended the program.
The United Nations theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” This theme highlights the need to take swift and decisive actions to achieve gender equality. The campaign “Give to Gain” also emphasizes increasing momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face in both their personal and professional lives.
International Women’s Day is a special occasion to recognize the achievements and capabilities of women and to raise awareness about their struggles, rights, and contributions to society. In Bangladesh, the day is being celebrated under the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” Various programs are being organized across the country to observe the day.
Women and girls around the world continue to face barriers that limit their rights, equality, and empowerment. Chittagong YMCA reaffirmed its commitment to building a world where all women and men—regardless of background, identity, or circumstances—can enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and empowerment.
At the beginning of the program, the female members present were welcomed with flowers by the Board of Directors of the Chittagong YMCA. General Secretary Mr. Immanuel Boiragy then explained the significance and background of the day.
Chairman Mr. Steve Oscar D Rozario spoke about the importance of women’s inclusion within the YMCA community. He highlighted the socio-economic significance of the day, emphasizing women’s achievements, the need to challenge discrimination, and the importance of collective efforts to build a future where equality becomes a reality for everyone.
Women and girl participants—including Ms. Charmaine Rodrigues (Professor of CIU), Ms. Marcela Baroi, and Ms. Joanna Peneiro—shared their personal challenges and real-life experiences. They also discussed issues such as preventing gender injustice, addressing conjugal conflicts, and raising awareness about divorce and family harmony.
Former Chairman and Life Member Mr. Errol Robertson and Mr. Moses Shamol Gomes also shared valuable experiences, life lessons, and guidance drawn from their own lives.
At the end of the program, Vice Chairman (Program) Mr. Flevian D Costa expressed his gratitude to everyone present for making the International Women’s Day program meaningful and successful.
