Youth Leadership and Teamwork through the Camping and Hiking Program (CH2)

Venue: Loolkandura Tea Estate (Kondagala Rock), Sri Lanka

1. Objectives of the Program

  • To provide hands-on training in essential outdoor skills like map reading and knot tying.

  • To build leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities through group challenges.

  • To create a space for youth from different regions to connect and build friendships.

2.  Details of the Program

The second stage of the Camping & Hiking Programme (CH2) brought together 28 enthusiastic young people representing local YMCAs from Batticaloa, Negombo, Kalmunai, Nugegoda, Komari, Akkaraipattu, Pamunugama, Navaly, and Jaffna College. Throughout the journey, the group was guided by experienced instructors who provided hands-on training and support during both the technical skill sessions and the challenging hiking expedition.

4. Proceedings, Outputs & Outcomes

  • The program began on March 20th in Kandy with hands-on lessons in map reading and tying essential knots.

  • Divided the youth into three groups, giving each team tasks to help them practice leadership and teamwork.

  • On March 21st, everyone completed a 9KM hike from Loolkandura Tea Estate to Kondagala Rock and back.

  • Every participant finished the trail, showing better endurance and a strong team spirit.


3. New Insights Gained

  • Participants learned how to stay safe and find their way during a hike.

  • They improved their communication and learned how to solve problems quickly in small teams.

  • Everyone saw how important it is to support each other when facing physical challenges outdoors.
