Shella Quezada Zagada
23 July, 1972 – 20 March, 2026
We are deeply saddened to share that Shella Quezada Zagada passed away unexpectedly at home on March 20, 2026, at the age of 53.
Shella served as Executive Secretary for Programs of the Asia & Pacific Alliance of YMCAs (APAY) from January 2002 to December 2006, where she dedicated herself to advancing Youth Empowerment and Gender Equity, mentoring young leaders through the Youth Participation and Leadership Development (YPLD) program and guiding women in the Gender Equity Committee to take on leadership roles in YMCAs and their communities. During her tenure, she also represented APAY at the Ecumenical Asia and Pacific Students and Youth Network (EASY-Net).
She was a pillar of her community, a source of wisdom, and a proud scholar whose achievements reflected her passion for education. After earning a Bachelor’s in Psychology, Shella completed a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) at Wilfrid Laurier University and pursued a PhD in Adult Education & Community Development at the University of Toronto. Her research focused on anti-racist leadership and Filipino history, areas close to her heart.
Studious, hardworking, health-conscious, well-traveled, and deeply connected, Shella touched many lives. She served for many years as MSW Program Manager at Renison College, University of Waterloo, where she was cherished by colleagues and students alike.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Shella was a loving wife and best friend to Manolito “Manny”, and a devoted mother to Steven (Stephanie) and Matthew (Evelyn). She was the youngest daughter among ten siblings of Felicidad and Juan Quezada. Even after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Shella faced her illness with courage, sustained by the love and support of her family and friends.
Her legacy of compassion, leadership, and resilience will continue to inspire all who knew her. Shella will be remembered with deep gratitude and love.
