Sharing the vision of youth initiative investment with the Leaders of the Igreja Protestante iha Timor-Leste (IPTL)

Venue: Protestant Church in Camea, Becora
In July, YMCA Timor-Leste gathered for a pivotal annual meeting, where it had the opportunity to share with Church leaders its devotion to the nation’s future and youth development. The National General Secretary representing the movement (Associação Nasional da Juventude Cristaun de Timor-Leste) shared a vision of partnership with IPTL pastors. While the church provides the spiritual foundation for our communities, the YMCA seeks to serve alongside IPTL by equipping our young people with the practical skills they need to thrive. NGS introduced YMCA work and extended an invitation to collaborate, ensuring that even youth in the most rural corners of our 13 municipalities are not left behind. To empower our youth, YMCA Timor-Leste focuses on three main pillars of capacity building:
Foreign Language teaching: We have successfully trained over a thousand young Timorese in foreign languages, particularly through our highly successful Japanese language courses. This program has directly enabled youth to secure overseas employment and international scholarships, providing economic lifelines for their families back home.
Environmental Stewardship: Through initiatives like our "Zero Plastics" campaign and beach clean-ups, we are training young people in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship so they can protect and develop their local communities.
Leadership Development: We organize youth capacity-development workshops that foster teamwork, conflict resolution and self-confidence, shaping young people into active, responsible leaders within their parishes.
We recognize that the Church is already present in these communities. The Church knows their names, their families, and their struggles. By combining the vast, trusted network of the IPTL Church across all 13 municipalities with the programmatic resources of YMCA Timor-Leste, we can bridge the gap between formal education, and the practical challenges young people face today. Together, we can build structured youth programs that foster leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
Moving forward, YMCA Timor-Leste is initiating a cooperative project to construct Community Sports Court Centers in targeted rural areas. These centers will serve as hubs for youth engagement, sportsmanship, and community building. We are not doing this alone. We have secured the commitment of strong partners to make this vision a reality, including:
Mobile Crisis Construction (MCC): a Perth-based Australian charity that deploys mobile brick factories to disaster and war zones.
YMCA Australia
Asia Pacific Alliances of YMCAs
The Caltech Group
These partners bring essential resources, infrastructure expertise, and international support; but for these centers to truly serve the community, we need local leadership. We are inviting the IPTL to partner with us in this endeavor. We want to work alongside local congregations to identify needs, host these initiatives, and guide the youth who will use these facilities.
