Revitalising the APAY YMCA Hotel Network
The Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs (APAY) Hotel Conference continued its renewed momentum in 2026, bringing together YMCA leaders and hospitality practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen partnerships, exchange best practices, and advance sustainable, mission-driven hospitality.
Following a 26-year hiatus, the conference was successfully reconvened from 23 to 25 July 2025 at YMCA Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme “Building a Legacy of Impact.” The relaunch re-established an important regional platform for YMCA hotels and hostels to collaborate and explore opportunities for enhancing operational sustainability and social impact.
Metropolitan YMCA Singapore (MYMCA) has had the privilege of serving as the Programme Lead for two consecutive years since the conference’s revival, overseeing programme development, coordination, and facilitation for both the 2025 and 2026 gatherings.
Building on the foundation established in Kuala Lumpur, the second reconvened conference was held from 5 to 9 October 2026 at The International Hotel, YMCA Chiang Mai, Thailand, with YMCA Chiang Mai graciously serving as the venue host.
Delegates from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, Bangladesh, Bombay, the Philippines, and Chiang Mai gathered to exchange operational expertise and explore how YMCA hospitality establishments can balance financial sustainability with their mission to serve communities.

From Shared Learning to Collective Action
Under the theme “Hospitality in Action: Building Sustainable Impact,” the conference focused on translating shared experiences into practical strategies and collective commitments.
Through interactive sessions – including the Pro-Action Café, Field Trips to Mae Kampong Village and Sao Hin YMCA and Design Lab – delegates explored how YMCA hospitality spaces can better serve guests and communities while strengthening partnerships and creating measurable social impact.
The Pro-Action Café examined four dimensions of stewardship: Relationships, Resources, Integrity, and Community. These discussions encouraged participants to consider hospitality beyond accommodation and revenue generation, emphasising responsible resource management, meaningful guest relationships, inclusive practices, and community engagement.

Building on these discussions and the experiential learnings from the Field Trips, the Design Lab consolidated delegates’ ideas into a shared strategic framework known as the Four Cs.
The Four Cs: A Framework for Sustainable Hospitality
A key outcome of the conference was the development of the Four Cs Framework, providing a common direction for YMCA hospitality establishments across the region.
The framework provides a foundation for future collaboration while allowing individual YMCA properties to adapt initiatives to their respective operational and community contexts.

Experiential Learning: Sustainability in Practice
The conference also featured field visits to Mae Kampong Village and Sao Hin YMCA in Chiang Mai, offering delegates firsthand insights into sustainable tourism and community development.
At Mae Kampong, delegates experienced a community-based tourism model demonstrating how environmental conservation, cultural heritage, and local livelihoods could be sustained through responsible tourism.
The visit to Sao Hin YMCA highlighted the YMCA’s role in community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Both visits provided practical inspiration for reducing environmental footprints, strengthening local partnerships, and integrating sustainability into hospitality operations.

Conference Evaluation and Key Outcomes
Delegate feedback reflected strong satisfaction with the conference’s relevance, programme effectiveness, and opportunities for regional collaboration.
Beyond these results, delegates identified three significant outcomes:
Stronger Regional Relationships: Meaningful connections and knowledge exchange among YMCA hospitality leaders, creating opportunities for continued cooperation.
Renewed Mission Alignment: A shared commitment to balancing financial sustainability with social responsibility and the YMCA’s mission.
Practical Sustainability Strategies: Actionable ideas from the workshops and field visits that could be adapted and implemented within individual YMCA properties.
Looking Ahead: APAY YMCA Hotel Conference 2027
Building on the progress made in Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Mai, YMCA Makati, Philippines, has graciously agreed to host the next APAY YMCA Hotel Conference from 21 to 24 October 2027.
The upcoming conference will provide an opportunity to review progress on the Four Cs, deepen regional partnerships, and translate collective commitments into tangible outcomes.
MYMCA extends its heartfelt appreciation to YMCA Chiang Mai for its warm hospitality and dedicated support as the 2026 venue host, and to YMCA Makati for stepping forward to host the next gathering. Sincere appreciation is also extended to APAY, participating YMCAs, facilitators, and delegates for their invaluable contributions.
