REV. SAMAN PERERA

Newly elected President – The National Council of the YMCAs of Sri Lanka

Rev. Saman Perera comes from a traditional Christian family rooted in the faith. He holds Masters in Theology from the University of Glasgow, Scotland (UK). He served as the President of Kandy YMCA from 2017 o 2021 and as a board member from 2010 to 2022 and gave leadership to many of the YMCA programmes. In addition to his contribution to Kandy YMCA, he has served in the subcommittees of NCYSL.

As a leader who started his mission from a Christian background, he held positions at many Christian organisations such as Chairperson of the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, Member of the Interreligious Advisory Board of the Presidential Secretariat, Sri Lanka, Moderator of the Presbytery of Lanka, Chairperson of the NCCSL Chaplaincy Board of the University of Peradeniya and several regional forums on various leadership roles.

He also has twenty-five years of experience in theological education as a visiting lecturer at Lanka Bible College Seminary Theological College of Lanka, fifteen years of experience as a parish in charge and five years’ experience as an associate minister in the Presbyterian Church in Sri Lanka. He has been functioning as a peace educator, NVCR workshop facilitator, resource person, and an activist concerning ethnic, socio and religiously marginalised of communities. In 1993, we founded an organisation named ‘Samadana’ to promote justice and peace through nonviolent action. The organisation has been involved with pre & post-war Sri Lankan society, especially in healing wounds, forgiving and forgetting past (painful) memories.
