Local YMCAs of Bangladesh Celebrated International Women’s Day 2025 

Introduction
On March 8, 2025, the local YMCAs of Bogra, Chittagong, Barishal, Kaligram, Jashore, Edilpur, Birisiri, and Savar celebrated International Women’s Day with enthusiasm and commitment to gender equality. The celebrations were aligned with the UN theme “Accelerate Action” and Bangladesh’s theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” Various events, discussions, and activities highlighted the urgent need for social change and the empowerment of women in different communities.

Chittagong YMCA Celebrates International Women’s Day 2025
Chittagong YMCA observed International Women’s Day by welcoming female attendees with flowers. General Secretary Mr. Immanuel Boiragy highlighted the significance of the day, while former Chairman Mr. Hubert Bapari emphasized women’s inclusion in YMCA’s initiatives. Chairman Mr. Manik Willver D’ Costa addressed socio-economic and biblical perspectives on women’s empowerment.

Women members, including Ms. Joanna Penheiro, Miss Angelica Dewri, and Ms. Supti Pike, shared personal challenges. Dignitaries such as former Chairman Mr. Noel G. Gonsalves, Vice Chairman (Personnel) Mr. John Bennette Roy, Honorary Treasurer Prof. Steve Oscar D Rosario, Board Director Advocate Lanny Jonathan Gomes, and Caritas Bangladesh Chittagong officer Mr. Daniel Sipu Gomes shared insights on equality and empowerment. The program concluded with Vice Chairman (Program) Mr. Albert Dewri thanking participants for their engagement.

Bogra YMCA International Women’s Day Celebration – 2025

On March 8, 1975, International Women’s Day was officially recognized and has since been observed globally. It is a significant occasion to advocate for women's rights across social, economic, political, and cultural domains. The celebration serves as a historic movement toward women's empowerment and equality.

Ms. Magdalene Francisca Besra, Vice President of Bangladesh YMCA, emphasized that women’s development is essential not only for their personal growth but also for the progress of society. She stressed the need for equal rights in family, healthcare, and workplaces, stating that "Rights, equality, and empowerment are responsibilities that must be fulfilled." Dr. Aporna Pramanic, President of Bogura YMCA, highlighted education as the foundation for progress. She called for increased access to education for women and the elimination of gender-based violence and discrimination, emphasizing that change begins at home through awareness and fairness in parenting. Mr. Robert Robin Marandi, General Secretary and CEO of Bogura YMCA, stated that women in Bangladesh are making strides in various sectors. He stressed the importance of ensuring their safety, dignity, and opportunities for contributing to national development, as no nation can truly progress if half its population is deprived of rights. Ms. Ruma Pramanic, Vice-President of Bogura YMCA, spoke on the role of education in empowering women. She emphasized that women's empowerment is a continuous effort, not a one-day event, and that society must foster an environment where women can thrive, with support from men. Mr. Sawrob Biswas, Executive Member, highlighted that International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of women's struggles and contributions throughout history. He stressed the need to uphold the principles of gender equality in all spheres of life, not just on this day but throughout the year.

Savar YMCA International Women’s Day Celebration 2025

Savar YMCA hosted a grand event at its office premises on St. Mother Teresa Road, Dewgaon, Savar, Dhaka. The half-day event welcomed around 100 women from different villages, fostering a sense of unity and purpose.

Chief Guest and Distinguished Guests

Ms. Marshia Mili Gomes, President of the National Council of YMCAs of Bangladesh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was presided over by Mr. Tapan Thomas Rozario, President of Savar YMCA, along with Executive Board Members and Sister Runu Morong, CSC, Candidate Director of Sisters of the Holy Cross, who conducted an impactful session.

The event began with a warm reception, including a graceful dance performance and floral greetings. Mr. Tapan Thomas Rozario delivered a welcome speech, stressing the importance of recognizing women's contributions and committing to gender equality. Ms. Marshia Mili Gomes delivered a powerful keynote speech on the progress and challenges of women's empowerment, urging women to take leadership roles. Sister Runu Morong conducted a thought-provoking session, discussing real-life challenges and solutions for women's empowerment.

Engaging Activities
The event included:

  • Life Story Sharing: Women shared personal journeys of overcoming challenges and achieving success.
  • Cultural Performances: Songs, dances, and recitations enriched the celebration.
  • Ice-Breaking Sessions: Activities encouraged interaction and camaraderie.
  • Rally: Participants marched with banners advocating for women’s rights and equality

The event concluded with a closing speech by Mr. Shekhor Gilbert Purification, Vice-President of Savar YMCA, followed by a communal lunch where attendees networked and reflected on the discussions.

Jashore YMCA International Women’s Day Rally and Discussion:

Jashore YMCA marked International Women’s Day 2025 with a rally at the Jashore DC Office, promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. The rally saw enthusiastic participation from YMCA members, youth, and community supporters, marching with banners and placards.

Following the rally, a discussion meeting provided a platform for participants to share their thoughts on gender equality and the role of the YMCA in advocating for women’s rights. The session reaffirmed Jashore YMCA’s commitment to a more inclusive society.

Conclusion
The International Women’s Day celebrations across the local YMCAs were a resounding success. These events not only highlighted the importance of women's rights and gender equality but also provided platforms for women to share their stories, voice concerns, and celebrate achievements.
