Sesquicentennial Celebration of Bombay YMCA – 150 Years of Impact and Service
Asia Pacific YMCA GS Nam Boo Won along with World YMCA President Soheila Hayek joined the celebration.
The Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Bombay YMCA, marking a remarkable journey of 150 years (1875–2025), unfolded at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA Nariman Point, Mumbai, on Friday, April 25, 2025. The event brought together over 500 participants, including local and international guests, for a historic day of remembrance and inspiration.
The ceremony commenced with the National Anthem and Maharashtra State Song, followed by an opening prayer led by Rev. Mrs. Arpana Rangayya, Chaplain of Wilson College. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp and a felicitation of Hon’ble Governor Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, introduced by Shri Noel Ammana, President of Bombay YMCA, and Adv. Rui Rodrigues, Chairman of the Sesquicentennial Celebrations Committee.
A Story of Light and Legacy
In his welcome address, Shri Noel Ammana warmly greeted the audience, setting the tone for an evening rich in history and gratitude. A beautifully crafted video presentation, "The Journey of the Bombay YMCA” took attendees on a journey through 150 years of milestones and memories.
An additional highlight was the inauguration of the Coffee Table Book and Souvenir Book titled "How Much Can We Do for Others" by the Hon’ble Governor. These publications, showcasing the YMCA's vibrant history and programs, serve as a testament to its firm commitment to service.
Illuminating Words of Wisdom
World YMCA President Soheila Hayek delivered a heartfelt congratulatory speech, resonating with spiritual warmth: “As we celebrate this milestone, we remember something profound: the YMCA is—and always has been—more than a set of programs. It is a spiritual movement, grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Your light, Bombay YMCA, has shone brightly for 150 years, and the world is better for it." Her words reminded all present of the legacy and the calling of the YMCA’s mission.
Mr. Vincent George, President of NCY-India, reflected on the remarkable legacy of the Bombay YMCA, saying, "Throughout its history, the Bombay YMCA has been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of the Indian YMCA movement. The mission of the YMCA—to serve communities, empower youth, and advocate for justice and equality—must remain our unwavering guiding light."
General Secretary of APAY, Nam Boo Won, extended congratulatory greetings from Very Rev. Philip Thomas, President of APAY, and offered his heartfelt wishes: "As you embark on this significant milestone, I pray for the Bombay YMCA’s enduring dedication and faithfulness to the contextual mission of the YMCA. May God’s blessings enrich your journey so that you continue to shine brightly as a beacon of hope and transformation, serving your people, communities, and the world beyond."
Hon’ble Governor Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan expressed admiration for the Bombay YMCA’s enduring values: “Though the word ‘Christian’ appears in its name, the YMCA stands as a truly secular organization that transcends barriers of religion, language, race, and color. It has touched lives through education, sports, and community services.” He delighted the audience with anecdotes about YMCA hostels, highlighting the organization's role in fostering hospitality.
150 Years of Unwavering Commitment
Since its founding, the Bombay YMCA has grown into one of Mumbai’s oldest and most impactful institutions. From its first building at Apollo Bunder in 1881 to the development of initiatives like the Social Service Department for underprivileged communities in Naigaum the YMCA has consistently embodied the spirit of social reform, service, and holistic development.
The event concluded on a heartfelt note as Shri Allen Kotian, General Secretary of Bombay YMCA, extended his gratitude, while Mr. Thomas Jacob, Secretary of the Church of North India Diocese, closed the ceremony with a prayer, encapsulating the spirit of unity, faith, and shared purpose.
As Bombay YMCA embarks on its next chapter, it remains a living testament to the power of faith-driven action, community care, and hope. Here’s to 150 years—and beyond—of empowering youth, transforming communities, and shining as a guiding light for a better world.
Significant Milestones in its Journey
1881: The YMCA inaugurated its first building at Apollo Bunder.
1890: The first YMCA hostel, "Young Men’s Home", opened in Grant’s Building.
1904–1906: A new chapter began with the foundation and inauguration of the Central YMCA at Wodehouse Road, which remained the headquarters for 66 years.
1915: The Procter Branch was inaugurated, recognizing Sir Henry Procter’s contributions.
1923–1925: The YMCA extended its mission to social service with a special focus on underprivileged communities in Naigaum, forming the Social Service Department.
