Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs
International Work Camps - 2015
06-13 July, 2015 – Mongolia
01-07 August, 2015 - Philippines
(Arrival, departure date included)

Introduction

Having been considered as a flagship program of the APAY Youth Committee, the International Work Camp is another opportunity for YMCA youth leaders and members to test out their leadership abilities and put in context the learning they gained from the Global Citizenship Education and related other training programs that they may have participated in recently. This program has been thought of as a way to work with Community.

The APAY International Work Camp, an annual event of APAY, has been usually conducted by local/national YMCA with two-pronged objectives, firstly, to work and cooperate with local people and youth to render service in response to particular needs; (ii) the youth participants are provide with learning experience to understand the condition of people in a less privileged community.

This year, APAY has planned organize two Work Camps as follows;

1. East Asia Work Camp : 6-13 July 2015 in Mongolia
(participants are expected to arrive Ulaanbaatar International Airport, Mongolia by the noon of 6th July and depart in the afternoon of 13th July)

2. South East Asia Work Camp : 1-7 August 2015 in Philippines
(participants are expected to arrive Iloilo Airport of Philippines by the noon of 1st August and depart in the afternoon of 7th August, the local host shall arrange transfer from the airport the work camp venue.)

We mainly encourage the East Asia and Pacific Countries to participate at the Work Camp in Mongolia and the South Asian & South East Asian countries to participate at the Work Camp in Philippines. However, this is not mandatory, we will accept few participants from other regions too.

The Mongolia YMCA is very new member movement of YMCA. They need YMCA work experience to serve their communities. This Work camp will help local youth & community to understand YMCA community development work and engagements.

Tapacon is small town in Illoilo, in Philippines. Last year the APAY work camp was held in Tambaliza in Iloilo. These two small villages have been severely affected by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. APAY has being working with suffering people since then through various relief and rehabilitation program. APAY invite South Asia & South East Asia youth to join this year work camp to continue our solidarity with these people and work to support these suffering people.

The living accommodations in both the work camp venues are very basic. During the work camp period all the participants sleep in the community center and Ger camps (Mongolian tradition house). Food and sanitation facilities shall be arranged by local organizing team. This work camp will be a good experience for the YMCA participants to get involved in manual work. As part of the practical experiences, participants will get an opportunity to interact with the communities too.

First Youth Reps program was introduced in the APAY strategic plan 2012-2015 and the high priority was placed on youth empowerment. Last two years APAY was in cooperation with the World Alliance through Change Agents. Therefore APAY recommended all Youth Reps to be the Change Agents of the World Alliance during the period of 2013-2014. This 2nd batch Youth reps would be different individuals from the change Agents. “Youth Rep” is the next generation YMCA leaders. We firmly believe that these Youth Reps shall lead their respective YMCAs in the future. They will have a global perspective, understand the reality of young people around the world and know the history of the YMCA as a movement that works for the empowerment of Youth.

The Youth Rep program is coordinated by the APAY. 40 Young leaders will be recruited for the next cohort (2015March -2017March).
