On Saturday 26 June 2021, more than 60 youth from different YMCAs worldwide attended the YMCA Global Virtual Youth Chillout event.

Due to the covid-19 crisis, communities, families and friends are unable to see each other in-person. During the pandemic youth are more vulnerable to loneliness and isolation. The Global Youth Virtual Chillout event is networking with YMCAs around the world to provide space for a monthly virtual hangout where youth, aged 16 – 30, can hangout, meet new friends and connect with other YMCA youths internationally. The event aims to have fun, welcoming, safe space, accessible and casual in nature.

Once in every two months on the last weekend, different YMCA’s from around the world partner together and take turns to host a 2 hour + virtual event on ZOOM with fun interactive activities and breakout rooms for youth to enjoy and to hang out with each other. The planning committee consist of YMCA staff representing their country and led by two YMCAs to coordinate, plan and host the event. Chillout event in June was planned and led by Jimmy Bacani from Pangasinan YMCA, Philippines and Jegan Jeevaraj from Batticaloa YMCA, Sri Lanka.

We had a beautiful opening devotion by members from YMCA India, and some fun community action songs by Jimmy Bacani. In the welcome remarks, APAY General Secretary, Nam Boo Won, gave a short but inspiring message about “The Asian Context of Resilience”, and encouraged the youth saying, “Crisis can be translated into opportunity. We should re-visit to the core question of why does YMCA exist? as we try to recover and re-build YMCA movement. At the same time, we should be able to look at the current world from the perspectives of human rights, Justice and Planetary Citizenship”.

According to the government figures, Hong Kong sends more than 380 tonnes of wood and rattan to municipal landfills every day. YMCA of Hong Kong strives to protect the environment and encourage people in the community play meaningful roles in turning ‘wastes’ into boons for the environment. Therefore, we kick-started the project of Waste Wood Upcycling Workshop in March 2021.

Winsome has been living in Mei Foo for more than a decade and always wants to contribute for her lovely community. The Workshop gives her an opportunity to decorate the YMCA Mei Foo Farm Fest by recycling the wasted woods into useful items. “We are not only giving the disposed woods a second life but are also benefiting the stallholders. I am very pleased to be able to give back to the Farm Fest.” She said.

Winsome spent 3 Sundays collecting wasted woods, learning woodcraft and making useful wooden furniture for stallholders of the farm fest. “Thank you YMCA for launching this social innovation project, to gather people in our neighbourhood who shared the same vision in making our community a better place.”

The second round of workshops were completed at the end of May and the third round of workshops are expected to be held in July. We are looking forward to engaging more ‘apprentices’ to participate in this meaningful project!

In support and solidarity with the Palestinian farmers, 200,000 olive trees were sponsored and planted in the last 20 years.

In 2022 we Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Olive Tree Campaign, by targeting 40,000 olive trees more.

The East Jerusalem YMCA and YWCA of Palestine Joint Advocacy Initiative (JAI) invites you to join our celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Keep Hope Alive (KHA) - Olive Tree Campaign (OTC).

Over the past 20 years the OTC helped some 15,000 Palestinian households in many of the Palestinian villages with some 200,000 olive trees that were sponsored by friends and partners from all over the globe. This was a great sign of support and solidarity with the Palestinian farmers that helped them maintain their lands , and earn living. It remarkably enhanced their resilience and steadfastness and kept their hope for a better future alive

The OTC has been growing since then. The Campaign started with 2,000 olive trees in 2002 and kept growing by time. More partners from different countries are now engaged in promoting the Campaign. Some 70,000 people have already sponsored trees and develop a type of connection with the Palestinian land and a commitment to promote just peace.

The olive tree was always seen as tool of solidarity, support, lobbying and advocacy. In many cases, It helped reach policy makers to bring about a change in people’s life and to contribute to ending the Israeli violations and the oppression of the Palestinian farmers and people under the Israeli occupation.
