The 35th APAY Advanced Studies Program

The 35th Advanced Studies Program of APAY will be held during 3 – 28 November 2017 at the YMCA Youth Village, Wu Kwai Sha, Ma On Shan, New Territories, Hong Kong.
Initiated in the year 1982, this training is held each year, as an advanced training program for the senior professional secretaries of the YMCAs of our region. The candidates should be a university graduate and have at least 3 years work experience in the YMCA’s core administration, at policy making level.
The main objectives of this month-long training is to enhance YMCA professional secretaries’ ability to critically analyze ongoing social processes, based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and develop the YMCA professionals who are mission-responsive, socially relevant and effective institutional leaders.
We urge the YMCA national movements of our region to nominate suitable YMCA professionals for the program. Detailed information and registration form of this course has already been dispatched to the national movements.
Limited amount of subsidies are available only for deserving candidates for air travel and participation fee. The registration fee and the green fee are mandatory for all participants. Subsidy requests should be sent along with the applications forms.
Applications with required documents should reach APAY on or before 31 July 2017 and successful candidates shall be notified on or before 15 August 2017 by APAY.

East Asia Gender Justice and Social Transformation Workshop

The three-day East Asia Gender Justice and Social Transformation Workshop was participated by twelve staff and lay leaders both young and senior members of YMCAs of Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau, Taiwan and Australia. The group that met on June 7-11, 2017 at Salisbury YMCA in Hong Kong strongly believes that the YMCAs in the region are not “gender blind.” However, the level of awareness and actions engaged in by the various movements in relation to advancing the rights of women and other sexual minorities need to keep moving forward. Thus, the concluding call for action is to continuously and consciously educate, organize and mobilize local and national movements to work together towards developing communities through their programs in which no one particularly women and other sexual minorities are excluded, marginalized or discriminated against because of their gender.

Way Forward Recommendations: • use of gender neutral/sensitiv language • conduct gender sensitivity workshop among staff and lay leader • conduct of cross generation training • accelerate formation and strengthening of gender justice committee on the national level • strengthen networking and partnership • Inclusion of other sexual minorities in programming • Collect data base on Gender-work in the Region • Publication of resource materials on gender justice • Expand advocacy on social media |

4th Green Ambassadors Training

The APAY 4th Green Ambassadors Training was held in Chiang Mai YMCA, Thailand during 22nd to 26th May 2017. About 30 youths from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated at this training. For the first time that there were participants for the Green Ambassadors Training representing organizations other than the YMCAs and also one participant from the newly formed YMCA group in Laos.
In the inaugural session Ms. Patcharin Sugunnasil, Member of the Board of Directors of Chiang Mai YMCA and Mr. Nam Boo Won General Secretary of the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs delivered words of felicitations for the participants. Mr. Takao Nishimura, Secretary General of the Y’s Men International was also present at the occasion had expressed his greetings to the participants. Dr.Chirapol Sintunawa, Professor at Mahidol University, Bangkok presented the keynote paper at the training conference entitled, “New Challenge in Mobilizing Action for Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
During the training program the participants dealt with the topics like “Environmental Protection & Combating Climate Change: A YMCA Imperative”, Water Footprint, Climate Change lobby and Advocacy, the Paris Accord, Concept of Green YMCA and Carbon Neutral YMCA, Energy Efficient Appliances, Carbon Audit and Carbon Calculator, etc.
During the training the participants had the opportunity to visit the Ban Loung Nua School ; Y Green School Model on Waste Management and Integrated Agriculture and visit Dara Academy, Y Green School Model on Low Carbon School and Climate Change Education. They also visited the Energy Learning Center operated by Sao Hin YMCA.
The Prince Royal’s College, Sanpatong Wittayakom School and Sacred Heart College of Chiang Mai had set up exhibition stalls at the training venue, demonstrating environmental activities of their respective schools. The YMCAs of Korea, Philippines and Chiang Mai also shared their environmental good practices during the training course.
During the training the participants also committed to enroll themselves in the eLearning Course on Climate Change developed by APAY. Colin Lambie, Dr. Wasan Jompakdee, Beng Seng Chan, Patcharin Aviphan and Duncan Chowdhury facilitated the training course.
On the final day, the participants prepared action plans, describing what environmental practices they will adopt in their personal life, their communities and in their respective YMCAs after this training.
Bread for the World, Germany supported the training program financially and it was organized by Sao Hin YMCA together with Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs.

Global Citizenship Institute, Aug 15-28, 2017

Introduction
The Global Citizenship Education of APAY is rooted in the YMCA mission of building a human community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation for the fullness of life for all creation. It speaks about sustaining an environment in which relationship among people are characterized by love and understanding. It is therefore the core of Global Citizenship Education, as a tool for youth empowerment, to nurture Global Citizens capable of appreciating their identity yet respecting cultural differences; to deepen understanding and critical thinking on social realities/issues both on a local, regional and global perspectives, to strengthen values of compassion among the marginalized sectors and to mobilize youth to act towards creating a society liberated from injustices.
Global Citizenship Education at the APAY level was initiated during the Tozanso Youth Roundtable on Globalization and Global Citizenship in July 2008 and later at the YMCA International Forum on Global Citizenship in Tokyo in the year 2008. The thematic development of APAY Global Citizenship Education took shape from these events which to date contributed and was utilized as a tool for the transformational development of the youth as change agents.
Since then, the APAY was involved in imparting Global Citizenship Education to the youths of the region through a series of workshops and trainings. These activities facilitated the integration of global citizenship perspective and competencies in local and national programs. The events were meaningful foundations in creating a zeal amongst the youth to continue exploring and working on community action-based programs that aim to contribute to the alleviation of poverty and eradication of social injustices.
The need to continue educating and engaging the youth through Global Citizenship-related pro-active programs grew stronger. It is through Global Citizenship Institute that knowledge and understanding of the Globalization, Social Injustices and Inequities, Diversity and Sustainable Community Development are recognized, reflected and acted upon. The comprehensive processes of the institute are concretely expressed through dialogue and experiential learning. Thus, the program provides an opportunity for the youth to learn from theoretical perspective and experience community life especially with those most vulnerable groups in the society. Along with the knowledge and values gained, the youth are assisted in gaining practical skills and competencies needed in program implementation.
The challenge called for through the Global Citizenship Institute is not only how well the participants are informed of the current social injustices. But more importantly on how as global citizens they would act as change agents through conducting community-based programs that are geared towards achieving sustainable community development.
This training is part of a series of programs planned to provide further competencies for YMCA Youth Representatives/Program Staff that are either engaged in or are planning to implement Global Citizenship Education (GCE) program.
